Asus Zenfone 5z head on head with e OnePlus 6

Can Asus Zenfone 5z replace Oneplus 6 from it's affordable flagship designation?

We all know about Oneplus, which has given the world some of the most affordable flagships in last few years. Oneplus 6 is one such phone from the company and also it's the latest device from Oneplus. Oneplus 6 is really a great phone, it has great performance, good camera, Superfast dash charging, buttery smooth user interface and many more. It even beats some of the flagship smartphones like Samsung S9 in some of the aspects. It is the best smartphone in $500-$600 price segment.
But now one more such smartphone is in the market. This smartphone was unveiled at MWC 2018 and now it is launching in various countries all around the world. This smartphone is Asus Zenfone 5z. This has many specs similar to Oneplus 6 and also it is priced somewhat around the same price segment. So does Asus Zenfone 5z a better smartphone than Oneplus 6? Let's check out in this article.

Qualcomm's snapdragon 845 is the high end chipset from the company which powers many of the flagship phones like Samsung S9/S9+, LG G7 ThinQ, HTC U12+ etc. This is an octa core chipset which four kryo cores cloaked at 2.7GHz each and the other four kryo cores cloaked at 1.8GHz each. The performance of all these devices is top notch, they all are among the fastest phones in the market. Both Oneplus 6 and Asus Zenfone 5z are powered by the same chipset. So the performance of these two phones will also be top notch. They both do all the tasks very fast like launching apps, rendering video and gaming is also lag free.

The design of both the smartphones is quite similar as well, they both come with notch displays just like iPhone X. But just like every other smartphone with notch you can hide it with software. Both the smartphones have a glass back which gives a premium build to the smartphone but at the same time it makes them a fingerprint magnet. The build quality of the two smartphones is really good. Oneplus 6 has a 6.28" AMOLED display while Asus Zenfone 5z has a 6.2" IPS LCD panel. Oneplus 6's display has a resolution of 1080*2280 pixels while Zenfone 5z's display has a resolution of 1080*2246 pixels. So it is obvious that the display is better on Oneplus 6 which is an AMOLED display. But the IPS LCD display on Zenfone 5z is also among the best LCD displays.

Now let's take a look at the cameras of both the smartphones. Oneplus 6 has a dual rear camera setup with 16MP,f/1.7 + 20MP,f/1.7 shooters. Asus Zenfone 5z also comes with dual rear Camera setup that is 12MP,f/1.8 + 8MP,f/2.0 shooters. The secondary lens on Oneplus 6 is just a normal lens for depth sensing while on Asus Zenfone 5z it is a wide angle lens. So the field of view on Zenfone 5z will be more when image is clicked in wide angle mode. This wide angle mode on Zenfone 5z makes a lot of sense as compared to other dual camera setups such as monochrome lens, telephoto lens and simple lens like on Oneplus 6. The camera on Oneplus 6 can capture videos upto 4k @ 30/60fps. It can also capture 720p slow mo videos @480fps.
Zenfone 5z's camera can capture videos upto 4k @30fps and 720p slow mo videos @240fps.

But these are just specifications, real world performance always comes different. Oneplus 6's camera is better than Zenfone 5z's camera in every aspect whether it be day light photos, portrait mode photos or low light photos. But the wide angle mode on Zenfone 5z is really cool it helps in capturing some really good pictures. Oneplus 6 has both EIS and OIS for better photography and stable video capturing while Zenfone 5z just has EIS. Oneplus 6 has a front camera of 16MP,f/2.0 while Asus Zenfone 5z has a front camera of 8MP,f/2.0. Clearly from all this Oneplus 6 seems to be a clear winner in camera department.

Oneplus 6 comes with oxygen OS which is more or less same as stock android along with some additional features. This oxygen OS is really light user interface. The optimization between the software and hardware is done very well by Oneplus. The performance of the phone is really smooth, opening up apps, jumping between the apps and transitions are really smooth. There are not any sort of lags and frame drops.

On the other hand Asus Zenfone 5z comes with ZENUI which is also based on Android Oreo. This is the best ZENUI version till date but still it is slightly heavier than oxygen OS. But the performance of this device is also very good. There are no frame drops or lags whatsoever. The apps open up quickly and the ram management is also very good. So the optimization is also done very well on this.

The sound department is where Asus Zenfone excels. It comes with stereo speakers which increases the sound. Also the quality of the sound is really good and really immersive. While the sound output on Oneplus 6 is through just one single speaker but that is also not bad. But the sound output on Oneplus 6 can't match that on Zenfone 5z due to it's stereo speakers.

Oneplus 6 comes in three versions that are 64GB,6GB, 128GB,8GB and 256GB,8GB. You can't expand the storage in this as it doesn't have any microSD slot. Asus Zenfone 5z also comes in three versions 64GB,4GB, 128GB,6GB and 256GB,8GB. Also it comes with hybrid SIM slot so the second SIM slot also doubles as a SD card slot.

We are already familiar with the fast charging technology on Oneplus phones that is dash charging which can charge the phone from 0% to 100% in like 1hr 10 minutes which is the fastest in the market. Asus Zenfone 5z also comes with quick charging 3.0 but it is not as fast as dash charging still it charges the phone from 10% to 100% in 1hr 30 minutes. Dash charger bundled with Oneplus 6 has rating of 5V 4A that is 20W while the fast charger with Zenfone 5z has rating of 9V 2A that is 18W.

Now lastly let's take a look at the pricing of two of the phones. Here in India Oneplus 6 64GB,6GB model is priced at 35000 INR that converts to around $550. Asus Zenfone 5z 64GB, 6GB model is priced at 30000 INR which converts to around $470 that is around $80 less than Oneplus 6. We have already seen all the aspects of the two smartphones, so it will be clear to us which phone is better. If it is still not clear, let's make it clear.
Oneplus 6 is a better smartphone than Asus Zenfone 5z considering all the aspects, maybe there will be a little bit difference but still it is better.
So now you must be thinking is it worth enough to spend $80 more for just little bit difference. This depends upon you.
If your budget is strictly around $450-470 you can simply go for Asus Zenfone 5z but up if budget is not a barrier you should definitely go with Oneplus 6 due to it's better UI, camera, display, promised updates etc.
