Are Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL worth buying smartphones?

Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL

Google is very well known brand for it's Pixel smartphones which have given very impressive camera results in past few years. Few years back smartphones from Google came under it's nexus series which was very well known for it's affordable price, flagship features and stock android experience. But later on they shut off it's nexus series came up with a new smartphone series which is known as Pixel. Pixel phones are no different then nexus series that is they also have stock android experience and all flagship features but the price of these phones are no longer affordable. So Google analyzed this and they launched two new smartphones that are Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL few days back. They actually come up with an affordable price tag. Google Pixel 3a starts at $399 while Pixel 3a XL starts at $479. So let's see today how affordable actually these smartphones are.

As there name suggest Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, one can easily tell that Pixel 3a has a smaller screen size than Pixel 3a XL. Google Pixel 3a has a screen size of  5.6 inch while Pixel 3a XL has  6.0 inch. Both the phones have same type of displays that is OLED display which comes in 18:9 aspect ratio. Both have a resolution of 1080p with 402ppi on Pixel 3a XL and 441ppi on Pixel 3a.

Back of this phone looks exactly similar to Pixel 3 devices. But there is a difference, Pixel 3 has full glass design at the back but Pixel 3a has glass at top while below it there is polycarbonate material that is plastic. This  reduces the weight of the device as compared to Pixel 3. But at the same time if you will hold the phone you will not get that premium feel as it is with Pixel 3 devices.

For good performance Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chip which is built on 10nm architecture. It is an octa core chip with two Kryo 360 cores cloaked at 2.2 GHz while other six Kryo cores cloaked at 1.7GHz each. The performance of this chip will be decent. Of course it will not be as fast as snapdragon 845 or 855 but still it's a powerful chip with two high performance cores and six power efficient cores. So there won't be any issue with the performance of the devise. Also for better gaming it is powered by Adreno 615 GPU.

Now take a look at the highlighting point of this device that is camera. Both the devices Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a XL feature exactly same camera as that of Google Pixel 3 XL and we very well know that Pixel 3 XL is among the best camera phones till date. So they are giving you a marvelous camera at a very reasonable price. There is a single camera setup at the back which is a 12.2 MP shooter with f/1.8 aperture, 1.4┬Ám pixel size. The camera is the highlighting point of this device. It has all the features that a Pixel 3 camera has. It has HDR+ which gives a very high dynamic range to the photos. It has night mode which gives outstanding results in very low light situations. It has portrait mode and background blur that can be adjusted after capturing the shots. It can record videos up to 4K but at 30fps only, no 60fps. It has both OIS and EIS for smoother video recording and video stabilization is really mind blowing with the two phones. The phone can also record slomo videos at 240fps.
Front camera is not as same as Pixel 3, it has a single camera at front which is a 8MP f/2.0 shooter. This is the only camera in the market right now which offers night mode in front camera as well. And the results with it's night mode are just outstanding.

Google Pixel 3a has a 3000 mah battery while Pixel 3a XL has 3700 mah battery. Both the phones come with 18W fast charger with in the box. They has USB Type-C port for charging. Both the phones also have 3.5mm jack which was missing on Pixel 3 and 3
XL.

For better sound output they have stereo speakers. Both the devices come in only one version that is 64GB internal storage with 4GB RAM. Also there is no microSD card slot. Both comes with one physical SIM and other electronic SIM support.

The device comes with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. The user interface is a highlighting point of this device. It comes with pure stock android with no junk apps at all. There won't be any lags or frame drops within the user interface. The phones will be updated to latest android software from time to time. They have been promised updates till 2 years.

Both the phones come in three colors that are Black, White and Purplish. Google Pixel 3a is priced at $399 and Pixel 3a XL at $479. Both the phones are priced very aggressively in USA. But when it comes to countries like India the pricing is not such aggressive. In India Pixel 3a is priced at 40000 INR which translates to about $571 and Pixel 3a XL at 45000 INR which translates to $640.

So now let's talk whether this phone is a good buy or not. Both the phones come with mid range price tag. At this price Google is giving us good display and a really great camera which hardly any phone offer at this price tag. So this is a good thing. But at the same time the chipset is not as a strong as on a flagship device. Google here is trying to give us a phone with some of the flagship features but at an affordable price. Some of the other companies also do same such as Oneplus or Pocophone but their approach is different. They try to go for flagship chipset thus providing good performance while compromising with displays and cameras. So companies have to compromise in some features to give a more balanced phone. It depends on the user what he wants in his phone.

According to me Google is going with a better approach as the performance of Snapdragon 670 is not that bad and this phone has stock android which will give a lag free user interface. So it further adds to overall performance of the device. And the flagship cameras are just marvelous on the phone which allows the users to do better photography at affordable price.

So buying a pixel 3a device will be a good buy if you live in USA or at some place where it is priced same as US. But if you live in a country like India I will not recommend you to buy this phone right now as at this price the phones are not worth for money. You can wait if you want as price of phones may drop but it also depends on the company.
